Back-to-School Safety Reminders

Bus Safety

Driving Safely in School Zones and Near School Buses
School is back in session! Please allow extra time for increased traffic and watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists. Stay alert and avoid distracted driving. Slow down in school zones and drive extra cautiously on school grounds and parking lots. Students should only be dropped off in designated areas. However, always be prepared for kids to appear in unexpected places, like from between parked cars; if they're on bikes, be prepared for them to turn in front of you without looking or signaling. Stop for students and pedestrians in cross walks. Follow the guidelines below when driving near school buses.

No cell phones

Cell Phone Use Notice

Per Public Act 096-0131, the use of handheld cell phones or other similar electronic devices (except if used in "hands free" mode) when operating a motor vehicle in a school zone is prohibited. In general, you are not allowed to talk, text, or surf the web with a cell phone or handheld device while operating a motor vehicle in a school zone. If your car is in park then you are allowed to use such devices, but if the vehicle is engaged (even if stopped at the time) you should not be using your cell phone or device. In order to minimize distracted driving and ensure the safety of our students, staff, parents, and community members in our school zones (either on the roadways or on school property), we are asking everyone to please follow these guidelines and adhere to the law. Our goal is to prevent accidents from happening and we are asking everyone for their cooperation and support to ensure that a tragedy doesn't occur.

Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

SELSEL at District 66 District 66 continues to be committed to Social Emotional Learning for all students and staff. What is social emotional learning? It is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. (CASEL)

During the 2019-2020 school year, we are excited to continue on our SEL journey! Our teachers and other adults throughout the district will be focusing on self-awareness. Self-awareness is the ability to accurately recognize one's emotions and thoughts and their influence on behavior. This includes accurately assessing one’s strengths and limitations and possessing a well-grounded sense of confidence and optimism.

Students at Elizabeth Ide and Prairieview will continue to have daily Morning Meetings. During this time, staff will incorporate the social emotional learning and activities to foster such growth. At Lakeview Jr. High, students will have weekly Advisory Periods during which time lessons will focus on Social Emotional Learning.

During Curriculum Nights staff will be sharing student-friendly social emotional learning vocabulary with parents. We encourage you to watch for newsletter information throughout the year, as to how parents can support this SEL journey!
