E-Learning Days
Center Cass District 66 is exploring the idea of E-Learning Days. An E-Learning Day would be instituted in place of an Emergency School Closing due to inclement weather. In our district, E-Learning stands for more than "Electronic" Learning as we want it to be "Engaged" Learning as well. Students will be able to select independent, meaningful lessons to be completed at home that use digital resources and/or engaging activities, including building or creating. Teachers will be available throughout the E-Learning Day via e-mail to assist students, as needed. Additional assistance will be provided when the students return to school. We do not expect parents to take on the role of teacher. The goal of E-Learning Days is to allow for continuity of instruction while also providing extra skill practice and enrichment.

We believe this unique opportunity will provide flexibility for students and their families. Utilizing E-Learning Days will ensure that our last day of school remains unchanged as extra days will not need to be added to the school calendar. An email was sent to families on November 6, 2019, which included a link to a one-question parent survey that will be open until Monday, November 11.

Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) Designations
The Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) has released the 2019 School Report Card. Every school receives an annual designation on the Illinois Report Card. Designations describe how well an individual school is meeting the needs of all its students. You can learn more about the ISBE school designations at https://www.isbe.net/support.

The summative designations for our schools are as follows:

Elizabeth Ide School - "Exemplary"
Prairieview School - "Commendable"
Lakeview Jr. High School - "Commendable"

Social Emotional Learning Highlights
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process of acquiring and effectively applying the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to understand and manage one's emotions. In addition, it is the process of setting and achieving positive goals, feeling and showing empathy toward others, establishing and maintaining positive relationships, and making responsible decisions.

From a school perspective, academics and social emotional learning go hand in hand and do not need to be taught separately or as "one more thing". In reality, Social Emotional Learning is "not one more thing on our plates, but rather it is our plate." If teachers model strong SEL skills for their students, establish routines in their classrooms, and teach these skills to students early on, the classrooms operate that much smoother.

A strong collaboration between home and school only enhances a student's SEL skills for life. Parents can focus on developing an ongoing, trusting connection with their child at home. Turn off devices! Talk to your children, support them in their homework, and simply hang out enjoying each other's company.

Prairieview Choir Students Shine at Music Festival
On Saturday, October 26th, twelve students from Prairieview Choir participated in the 2nd Annual District 1 Elementary General Music Festival in Chicago. Two students engaged in a drumming workshop, and ten students participated in a choir workshop, each with renowned clinicians in the field of music education. Students who participated in the choir workshop rehearsed in advance with K-5 Music Teacher, Carey Crows. All twelve students shined in the culminating performance at the end of the day!
