Social Emotional Learning
District 66 continues to incorporate the practice of Growth Mindset and Social Emotional Learning in everything we do with both students and adults.

December's Growth Mindset focus was Feedback is a Gift - Accept It. In 2007, Carol Dweck conducted an experiment with 400 students. Students were presented with a test featuring several easy-to-solve puzzles. When the first puzzle was solved, the researchers gave students one of two responses: "You must be smart at this" or "You must have worked really hard". Then students were able to choose their second puzzle to complete. The majority of the students who were praised with "You must be smart at this" opted to take the easier puzzle. Dweck summarized that students who were praised for being smart wanted to hang onto their praise and became less likely to take risks. In essence, the students moved into their fixed mindsets for self-preservation.

Do you know the difference between personal praise and process praise? Personal praise focuses on an individual's personal traits and qualities, such as intelligence. The concern with this type of praise is it sends the message someone has succeeded due to an inherent trait and not because of their effort and/or perseverance. Process praise acknowledges effort, strategies, and actions. As you continue to foster a growth mindset in your children, think about what kind of praise you give and why.

Happy holidays from Elizabeth Ide!

Polar Express  Polar Express

There isn't a more
extraordinary time than during the holidays when lights glow with a beautiful illumination suppressing the hustle and bustle of shopping, parties, and lists. At Elizabeth Ide, the students carry that glow with them every day. Their world is full of magic and this year, their library was too. Students were given tickets to board the Polar Express and asked to wear their pajamas. During the read-aloud displayed on the big screen, hot chocolate was served and students were given "the first gift of Christmas" (a sleigh bell). Happy Holidays to all of our district families. We were honored to be able to share this magical time with your most precious gifts.

Tivoli
Prairieview students enjoyed a trip to the Tivoli Theater in Downers Grove to watch "Elf" for their annual all-school holiday movie.

Prairieview
Such a fun way to head into winter break...Santa's helpers handed out candy canes to all of our Panthers at Prairieview! See you in 2019!

Lakeview
During a visit to Lakeview, Dr. Arnold joined in with a 6th grade social studies class by taking on the role of one of the characters in the Greek drama the class was reading. The students enjoyed having a guest actor!

Visit to Ide  Ide visit
Lakeview 7th graders took a trip to Elizabeth Ide to read their original children's stories to 2nd grade students.
